Getting hit in the face is not a natural part of life for most human beings and is definitely something that will shock your system. In boxing, we face this painful aspect of the sport for the sake of other benefits i.e. supreme fitness, self-confidence, resilience, personal conviction, respect from peers and inner peace against nagging thoughts of inadequacy.
The best part about boxing is that the intensity of the sport does not require us to absorb punches to the face for long in order to receive a lifetime of benefit. Depending on what you are looking for, one year to three years of boxing can yield a lifetime positive effects. Check out my video below on some practical ways to reduce your fear of getting hit, and as a result get more out of your boxing.
Here is a drill to help you build up confidence with punches coming at you
Hi Jason,
I just love your way of talking through a video. Can I receive the 40min link you discuss at the end?
Kind regards,
Armand
Thanks Armand, when you signed up for my newsletter it would be the first message you received. I’m just wondering if you received it? can you please check.
Outstanding video! Your teaching and insight is right on. Really excellent. One thing I have been working on is, when I know I am about to take a hit to the body, is to try and time my exhale so I am breathing out right when my opponent’s glove makes contact. Also, I try to inhale through my nose more so I can bite down on my mouth guard, although this has been tough for me, as I like to breath through my mouth to get more air. I get tagged in my jaw a lot, and this hurts much more if I’m taking a breath and my mouth is open. Also, the fundamental rule of keeping your head down, chin to chest, can not be overstated. Taking a right straight with your head up really tweaks the neck. I think the worst places to get hit are the temple (I almost got a KO with a hook to my temple) and the dreaded liver shot, so I try to block those areas the most. Thanks again for a great video!
Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience and challenges. J
Jason,
As always, great coaching advice on your part!
Notably given the regular advice in the local gyms I often hear: “a two or three reckless full strength sparring sessions and you won’t be concerned with punches any more, believe me…”
Best,
Would like to recive the 40 min video. I thought the video on fear of getting hit was spot on.
Thanks
Marty
