Boxing Drills

Welcome to my page on boxing drills, where I’ll guide you through some of the most effective exercises to improve your skills in the ring. As your coach, I’ve designed these drills to target key areas like speed, power, endurance, and technique, so you can become a more well-rounded fighter.

Head Movement Drills

If you’re looking to improve your head movement in boxing, you’re in the right place. Many aspiring fighters focus on footwork and punching power but often overlook the importance of a solid defense—especially the art of slipping punches. As a fighter and coach, I get asked frequently about ways to improve head movement. Let me tell you right now: it’s all about putting in the work.

In this video, I break down the drills you need to master head movement, particularly slipping, and how you can incorporate them into your regular training routine. These drills are designed to build muscle memory and reflexes, key components for staying elusive in the ring. Let’s dive in.

A lot of you might be looking for secret techniques or shortcuts to improve your defense, but here’s the truth: there are no magic tricks. Tips and tricks won’t do much for you unless you’re committed to putting in the rounds. That means consistent practice, drills, and repetition.

Training head movement is much like any other skill in boxing—you’ve got to work on it, and you’ve got to put in the effort. It’s not enough to know what to do; you have to engrain those movements into your muscle memory.

Heavy Bag Drills

Boxing is a sport that demands not just power but also speed, stamina, and precision. Whether you’re a seasoned fighter or just starting, heavy bag training is a vital part of your workout. Incorporating different drills helps you to focus on various aspects of your boxing performance, from endurance to technique. In this post, we’ll explore eight heavy bag drills that will enhance your boxing skills, boost your stamina, improve your speed, and add some much-needed variety to your routine.

Drill 1: Stamina Building Stamina is key for fighters. Start by throwing straight punches (jab and cross) for two continuous minutes, maintaining speed and power. This drill builds endurance, helping you sustain high output during fights.

Drill 2: Speed Punching Focus on punch speed. Stand close to the bag and throw fast punches (jabs, crosses, hooks), emphasizing quick retraction. Practice for 1-2 minutes, focusing on speed and form.

Drill 3: Power Conditioning Develop power with bursts of heavy punches (crosses, hooks, uppercuts), alternating with light punches or short rests. Do 3-minute rounds with 30-second power intervals to boost explosiveness.

Drill 4: Defense and Movement Defense is crucial. Combine punches with defensive moves like slipping, ducking, or stepping around the bag. Practice for 3-minute rounds to sharpen your footwork and head movement.

Drill 5: Combination Punching Mix up punches with combinations like jab-cross-hook. Practice fluid, accurate combinations for 3-minute rounds to simulate real fight scenarios.

Drill 6: High-Low Attacks Alternate between high and low punches, switching between head-level and body-level strikes. This drill enhances versatility in targeting different areas of an opponent.

Drill 7: Endurance Punching Focus on nonstop punching for extended periods, usually 3-minute rounds. This drill challenges your mental and physical endurance, pushing you to maintain intensity through fatigue.

Drill 8: Freestyle Punching Combine all techniques—speed, power, combinations, and defense. Stay active and fluid, mixing punches and defensive moves as you move around the bag.

Conclusion Heavy bag training offers flexibility. Rotate or combine these drills to keep workouts fresh. Incorporating them regularly will improve your stamina, speed, power, and defense, helping you progress in the ring.
